Highland Lakes Dam Community

Listings in Buchanan Dam, TX

Welcome to Buchanan Dam, a Lake Buchanan community in Llano County, built by the construction of the namesake dam and known for fishing, boating, and Highland Lakes living.

Buchanan Dam is a census-designated place in Llano County, Texas, on the shore of Lake Buchanan in the Texas Hill Country. With about 1,500 residents, it is a small lakeside community whose history and identity are inseparable from the dam that gives it its name. The community began in 1931, when the Emery-Peck and Rockwood Development Company began construction of the dam and established a post office and a settlement for the several hundred workers who built it, supported by commercial, medical, and recreational facilities. Originally planned as Hamilton Dam, the structure was renamed Buchanan Dam in 1934 for U.S. Representative James P. Buchanan. Deliberate impoundment of the reservoir began in 1937, the dam was completed in 1938, and its first generator began operating that January. The result is Lake Buchanan, the uppermost of the Highland Lakes on the Colorado River. Today Buchanan Dam is a quiet, largely residential community where most residents own their homes and recreation centers on the lake. Fishing for white bass and striped bass, boating, and kayaking are popular, and Colorado Bend State Park, Inks Lake State Park, and the Canyon of the Eagles are nearby. Students attend the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District, which serves the surrounding Highland Lakes area. The community's setting is classic Hill Country, with oak-covered hills, ranch land, and the broad expanse of the reservoir shaping the landscape. For homebuyers, Buchanan Dam offers lakeside living and a rural Hill Country pace, with the towns of Llano, Burnet, and Marble Falls within a short drive.

About Buchanan Dam

Real Estate & Housing

Buchanan Dam's housing reflects its lakeside, rural character. The community consists primarily of single-family homes and lake-oriented properties, including lakefront residences, weekend cabins, and homes on larger Hill Country lots. Most residents own their homes, and the housing stock ranges from modest older dwellings to newer lake houses with water access. Because Buchanan Dam is a small census-designated place rather than a developed city, the market is limited, with resale homes and occasional vacant or lakefront parcels making up most activity. Buyers are typically drawn by Lake Buchanan access, the rural setting, and Hill Country recreation.

Neighborhoods

Buchanan Dam is a single lakeside community rather than a collection of named subdivisions, centered around the dam and the Lake Buchanan shoreline. Homes and cabins are spread along the local roads and the water's edge, with the Buchanan Lake neighborhood forming the community's residential core. The surrounding landscape is classic Texas Hill Country, with oak-covered hills and open ranch land. This layout gives Buchanan Dam a relaxed, dispersed character, where lakefront properties, rural homes, and the dam itself all sit within a short distance of one another.

Lifestyle in Buchanan Dam

Life in Buchanan Dam revolves around Lake Buchanan and the Highland Lakes. Residents enjoy a rural, relaxed pace with boating, fishing, and lake recreation at their doorstep, from spring white-bass and striped-bass runs to quiet kayak trips. The community is small and neighborly, with most residents owning their homes. Larger towns such as Llano, Burnet, and Marble Falls provide shopping and services within a drive, while the Hill Country setting offers scenic drives, wineries, and open space. Buchanan Dam appeals to lake lovers, anglers, and those seeking a quieter Hill Country lifestyle centered on the water.

Schools & Education

Buchanan Dam is served by the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District, which provides public education for students from the community and the surrounding area. Students travel to the district's campuses for their elementary through high school education. The district serves a largely rural region of the Highland Lakes and Hill Country, and its schools anchor the area's community life. Families moving to Buchanan Dam should note the reliance on neighboring towns for schooling and services, with additional educational options available in nearby Llano and Burnet.

Getting Around

Buchanan Dam is reached by state highways and local roads that connect the community to the surrounding Highland Lakes towns. State Highway 261 runs through the area, and the towns of Llano, Burnet, and Marble Falls provide the nearest concentrations of services, employment, and highway connections. The community's rural Hill Country setting means most residents rely on personal vehicles for commuting and errands. For regional travel, the Highland Lakes corridor offers routes toward Austin and the rest of Central Texas, though Buchanan Dam itself remains a quiet, off-the-main-road lakeside settlement.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Buchanan Dam is centered on Lake Buchanan, the uppermost of the Highland Lakes. The reservoir is known for its spring white-bass and striped-bass runs, and Texas Parks and Wildlife stocks striped bass in the lake. Boating, kayaking, and lakeside camping are popular, with the dam's hydroelectric currents adding interest for paddlers. Nearby Colorado Bend State Park, Inks Lake State Park, and Canyon of the Eagles expand the outdoor options with hiking, camping, and nature viewing. The Highland Lakes region also hosts events such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Lake Buchanan Bass Classic.
